The Benefits of Oatmeal
Oatmeal is a cereal that has been known since ancient times as a food for animals and humans. In 2,000 BC, the wild oat, Avena Sativa, was used in Arabia and Egypt by women for its beautifying effects. it wasn't until the plant was readily available in northern Europe that its therapeutic benefits were discovered. Harsh winters amplified its qualities as a natural moisturizer for dry, itchy skin. It became a tradition to keep a jar of oatmeal near the sink to alleviate skin problems caused by soap and detergents. Oatmeal baths were common - especially for babies and small children who needed generalized treatment for dry, itchy skin. Mothers often put rolled oats in cheesecloth or an old stocking, tied the ends and put this in the bath water.
Colloidal oatmeal is obtained from the seeds of Avena Sativa by means of a special milling process. Essentially, it is a powdered form of oatmeal made by grinding whole oat kernels into microscopic particles. This allows the extra-fine oatmeal to readily disperse in water and, as a bath additive, for example, to provide the therapeutic skin properties of the oat grain. it can also be successfully formulated into other deratologicals such as cleansers and moisturizers.
Colloidal oatmeal binds to the skin and creates an adherent barrier that is thought to protect the skin from harmful substances. The hydrated colloidal granules of colloidal oatmeal adhere to the surface of the skin and in its folds. In this way, the oatmeal provides a protective acion by creating a protecting film on the skin to absorb humidity and reduce friction.

Chemical Properties and Attributes
The chemical composition of colloidal oatmeal features polysaccharides, proteins and lipids. this unique chemical makeup causes colloidal oatmeal to havea high affinity for both water and oily substances; it absorbs solid and oily dirt on the skin, and cellular residue of the stratum corneum and temporarily anchors onto the skin the moisturizing and emollient elements contained in the grain itself, plus any other ingredients that may have been added during the production of colloidal oatmeal products.
When colloidal oatmeal picks up water or oily substances it physically swells, leading some to call it a natural "microsponge". Its ability to exchange, absorb and release substances is quite remarkable. Moisture is also attracted from the atmosphere onto the skin. the anchored moisturizing nature making the skin softer and more elastic.
Colloidal oatmeal has long been recommended to relieve the itch associate with xerosis and over the years its effects have been reported to clinical literature. It acts as a naturally occurring antipruritic agent and its soothing action helps reduce and prevent skin reddening and irritation.

Aveeno is the only complete line of skin care products featuring colloidal oatmeal including bath treatments, cleansers, moisturizers, anti-itch and shaving products. Aveeno for the Alopecian Community!
I first heard of Aveeno from a local pharmacist who recommended it for my skin - she said if I had troubles retaining moisture because of my lack of hair, that I should try a new Johnson & Johnson product they had received. I was extremely pleased with not only the results, but the fact it was made from all natural products.

I found out how to contact the company and after a couple of months of exchanging letters I received a shipment of samples on behalf of Johson & Johnson for all Alopecians to test themselves.

Thank you Gayle, again, and to Betsy for providing me with valuable information about oatmeal and Aveeno! You've both made a lot of people around the world extremely happy!
